CHOOSING WITH CONTEXT

Compare the cutting head and the ratchet as separate features

Anvil describes the cutting arrangement; ratchet describes a staged operating mechanism. Compare whether you want a ratchet, a selectable mode or a straightforward anvil tool, then check the exact branch rating and grip. These features should not be collapsed into one universal dry-wood rule or a promise about cutting effort.

Exact-model service partsBuying a maintainable model rather than an unspecified spare kitFELCO 31: maker lists blade 30/3 and spring kit 30/91; handedness needs confirmation

Decide whether staged cutting is the feature you need

Corona RP3230 is a ratchet pruner with a stated 3/4-inch branch capacity. Garden Guru’s 2-in-1 model adds a switch between single-cut and ratchet settings on one tool. That is a different buying choice from FELCO 31’s anvil arrangement. A ratchet’s stages and a cutting head’s support shape describe different parts of the decision; the presence of one does not establish the other’s capacity.

Read the branch rating with its conditions

The Gardener’s Friend describes branches up to 1 inch depending on the wood and the user’s strength. WORKPRO’s 8-inch anvil selection separately states a 0.75-inch/19 mm capacity and names dead or dried growth among its uses. FELCO describes the 31 for hard or dead wood. The stated diameter remains a model-specific claim, not a guaranteed effort level or permission to substitute any ratchet for a saw.

Compare the contact and holding details

The Gardener’s Friend names a neoprene insert in its anvil, while the WORKPRO describes an anvil groove, spring action and anti-slip grip. Garden Guru has a dual-mode switch. These concrete details are more useful than an unmeasured power multiplier. Check hand fit separately: FELCO 31’s selected option says Right, while its maker page also uses universal and left/right wording. Confirm handedness rather than assuming all anvil pruners share one grip orientation.

Plan maintenance by exact model and component

FELCO 31 is described with replaceable parts, and its maker lists blade 30/3 with washer and spring kit 30/91 on that model page. Those are separately identified service components, not spare blades or springs included with every pruner. The lock, ratchet and spring are also different components; match the actual part and instructions instead of treating a similar-looking pruner as a repair donor.

Questions before choosing

Is an anvil pruner automatically a ratchet pruner?

No. The cutting arrangement and staged mechanism are separate features. Compare the explicitly ratcheting RP3230 or selectable Garden Guru model when staged operation is the reason for buying.

Does a 1-inch rating mean I will always manage a 1-inch branch?

The Gardener’s Friend explicitly qualifies its 1-inch statement by wood and individual strength. Other ratings also belong to their named models; no general effort guarantee follows from the diameter alone.

Can I buy FELCO 31 assuming it is fully ambidextrous?

Confirm that requirement first. The selected option says Right, while the maker’s page also uses universal and left/right descriptions. The available wording does not justify choosing one handedness claim and discarding the other.

Are the FELCO replacement blade and spring included?

The maker identifies those as service parts for the model. That is different from an itemized spare-parts bundle supplied with the pruner; check the actual package and part code before ordering.

Choose the cutting arrangement and operating mechanism separately. Match any service part to the exact receiving model, and keep branch conditions with the stated capacity.
